Halloween is just around the corner so the big question is, “which wine should I drink while stealing 1/2 of my kid(s)’s candy?”
Well if it’s chocolate you can’t go wrong with a sweet, late harvest Zinfandel. These wines have enough sweetness to hold up next to the chocolate yet enough acid to still be refreshing after several sips.
Additional wines would be any sweet red wine because most sweet wines have a good sweet/sour (aka sugar/acid) balance.
These wines include some Ports as well as some Italian Passito wines and many red sparkling wines.
With candy, rice crispy treats and candied apples a white dessert wine, such as a Sauternes, goes exceptionally well.
Additional white wines could include some sweet Rieslings (although those come in many sweetness levels), Icewine and most white dessert wines.
Be careful with Moscato because although it is sweet it may only be sweet enough for some of the milder treats such as the apples.
This is one time you want to go sweet on sweet!!

Remember that sweet foods need to pair with a wine that is even sweeter to avoid having the food influence the perceived taste of the wine in a negative way... bitter and sour. Having a wine with a bit of acid (think lemonade- both sweet with some sour, aka acid) to keep the drink refreshing and not syrupy sweet. This acid allows the wine and chocolate/ candy pairing to be an extraordinarily pleasant experience vs something that is overwhelming.
Cheers and Happy Hallowine!!
